Add standard links to your campaign emails

Including the standard links play a key role in giving your customers full control over their marketing preferences when they receive campaigns from you. The standard links include: Preference centre link, unsubscribe link and view online.

Written by Fatma Abid

You can add the three standard links: View Online, Unsubscribe and Preferences Centre to your campaign emails in just a few steps. Each recipient automatically gets their own personalised version of the link when the email is sent.

The three standard links

Each standard link provides something different for your recipient, so it's worth knowing what each one offers before you add them.

Link

What it offers for your recipient

Example wording

View Online

Opens the email in a web browser. Useful if their email app doesn't display it properly.

Having trouble viewing this email? View in browser

Unsubscribe

Lets them stop receiving your marketing emails.

Unsubscribe

Preferences Centre

Lets them update their details and choose which communications they get, without unsubscribing completely.

Manage your preferences

🤓Tip: You can add the View Online link at the very top of your email, and the Unsubscribe and Preferences Centre links in the footer.

Create the link

To create a standard link, follow the steps below. Repeat them for each standard link you want to use.

  1. Open your email or template in the template editor, the in the toolbar at the top of the editor, click the Link Editor button icon.

  2. The Link Editor window opens. Make sure Add Link is selected at the top.

  3. Click the Standard Links tab.

  4. Turn on the switch for the link you want, and the URL field fills in automaticallyn you don't need to change it:

⚠️Important: You can only turn on one standard link at a time. To add more than one, save the first link, then open the Link Editor again and repeat these steps for the next.

    • View Online.

    • Unsubscribe

    • Preferences Centre.

  5. Click Save Link.

🤓Tip: You can add in a link name for each URL if you wish. Just enter a name that's easy to recognise, for example Unsubscribe.

Add the link to your design

To add your saved link to your design, follow the steps below.

  1. In your design, add then select the text you want to link, for example Unsubscribe or you can also select a button.

    • For text:

      1. Highlight the words and click Special links in the text toolbar.

      2. Select Standard links.

      3. Select the relevant link.

    • For a button:

      1. Select the button, then on the link settings in the panel on the right, click Special links.

      2. Select Standard links.

      3. Select the relevant link.

  2. Repeat for each standard link, then save your work with Save, or use Save & Apply if you're editing a campaign email.

🤓 Tip: Once you've saved a link, you can use it on as many pieces of text or buttons in the same email as you like.

Tips to check your links

Before you send your campaign, you can confirm your links are set up correctly.

  • Click Smart Check in the top of the editor toolbar. It checks for each standard link, and shows a warning if one is missing: "View online link missing", "Unsubscribe link missing" or "Preference link missing". If you see one, go back to the previous section and add that link.

  • Send yourself a test email via the Send Test icon and click each link to make sure it opens the right page.

📌Note: Standard links are personalised for each recipient when the email is sent, so they won't work from inside the editor preview. Always test them with a test send.

Troubleshooting

If something isn't working as expected, use the table below to find the fix.

What you see

What to do

The Link Editor button is greyed out.

Wait a moment for the editor to finish loading. The button isn't available in preview mode, so switch back to edit mode.

You edited a link, but your email still uses the old one.

Links already in your design don't update automatically. Remove the link from your text or button, then add it again from Special links.

Smart Check still says a link is missing.

Make sure you chose the right saved link and saved the design, then run Smart Check again.
